Steel Producer – Maintenance Apprenticeship Program

This steel producer experienced an increased demand and shortage of maintenance labor after losing a portion of its workforce through the retirement of its most experienced and highly skilled technicians. In the past, the mill addressed retirements via help-wanted ads and filled the ranks with skilled and qualified workers from the street. As the talent pool of available skilled maintenance workers began to dry up, the organization took a closer look at skills training and workforce development. Traditional approaches leveraging local technical colleges and military were severely lower than in the past and a new approach was needed. The challenge was how to quickly fill the voids created by the retirements and address how to build the skills of both the new and existing maintenance workforce.
