Career Development Program Increases Employee Engagement

Challenge

A telecommunications and digital services company was experiencing low engagement among technical workers and wanted to provide a non-mandatory career development program to those workers to decrease employee turnover.

Solution

GP Strategies collaborated with the company’s training department to develop a new blended program designed for the specific needs of technical employees. Since leaders were dispersed throughout the region and had different schedules, the team devised an entirely virtual initiative to optimize engagement. Based on external market research and internal surveys, the team developed the program to cover the following topics: Growth Mindset, Courage Leadership, Commitment to Results, Engagement with Society and Customers, Agility, Efficiency, and Ambidexterity.

Each phase started with a live broadcast session featuring a different speaker (including two Olympic champions). This was followed by online content, virtual meetings, videos, and gamified content. The course lasted for 10 months and comprised approximately 20 hours of training.

In the second month of training, participation was threatened by natural disasters in specific regions of Brazil. The participation deadline was extended to overcome this challenge, and a recognition campaign was created to reward learners from the most engaged regions.

The non-mandatory program surpassed all predetermined success measures and was scheduled to continue.

Results

  • Helped lower employee turnover by 18.37%
  • Achieved a participation rate of 42% of the total audience, surpassing the target rate of 30%
  • Received an average participant score of 9.4 out of 10
  • Employee net promoter score increased from 76 to 83
