The Leader's Compass: Leading Through Disruption

A leadership development program for leading through change, uncertainty, and continuous disruption.

The Framework Leaders Need to Thrive in Constant Uncertainty

Continuous disruption is no longer the exception. It is the operating environment. Restructures overlap, AI reshapes work faster than policy can respond, and leaders, caught between executive pressure and their teams’ needs, are quietly drifting.

Manager behavior alone accounts for 70% of the variance in team engagement (Gallup, 2024), and between 40-50% of employees report significant strain, with leaders left absorbing much of it (McKinsey, 2023).

The Leader’s Compass is a leadership development program that responds to this reality. The framework was built for mid- to senior-level leaders navigating change, matrix accountability, and multiple pressures who feel stretched but can’t always articulate why. It doesn’t add another model to the leadership pile—rather, it gives leaders the language, the framework, and the practical behaviors to lead differently when the terrain will not sit still.

How This Program Helps Leaders Navigate Change

The Leader’s Compass centers on one shift that matters more than any competency framework in an environment of continuous disruption: moving leaders from Hero to Guide. It is built upon four directions leaders can navigate by:

Character

the version of you your team gets when the week is hard

Connection

who is actually coming with you, not just who is on the invite

Critical Thinking

the discipline of slowing down before deciding

Creativity

the search for a different answer, and the belief there can be one

More Than a Leadership Workshop: A 90-Day Behavior Shift

The core session is the vehicle. What leaders do differently over the next 90 days is the real intervention.

Two hours virtual or three in person, diagnosing the pressure and introducing the Hero-to-Guide shift.

Each leader commits to one immediate action item tied to their weakest Compass direction.

Short prompts over the following 30 days keep the Compass active on the job.

Structured check-ins turn the framework into practiced behavior.

A short pulse survey at the start and end of the program tracks the shift and gives leadership visibility into progress.

The Hero Used a Map. The Guide Uses a Compass.

The Leader’s Compass was designed by Nic Girvan, Senior Director, Leadership Product & Consultancy at GP Strategies, drawing on 25 years of leadership and OD experience and 10 years as an executive leader. The framework is proprietary, evidence-informed, and delivered by facilitators who have led through the exact conditions the program addresses.

This is leadership development that treats leaders as adults. It names the uncomfortable things honestly, it respects the pressure they are already under, and it leaves them with something specific to do about it.
